Roll for Initiative.

When I was around 20, I overheard a friend talking about meeting up with some other friends to roleplay. I’d never done this before, but I knew it was something I wanted to try, so I  managed to invite myself along. (I was more confident as a ‘young adult’ and doing this never used to bother me). I was introduced initially to the world of Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D 2nd Ed.), and through this gateway drug into the worlds of Cyber Punk 2020, MegaTraveller, and various others.  This also had a knock-on effect of introducing me to new comics and musics through the other members of the group. Basically it was a deathcry for my monthly wages!

As with most groups of friends, we slowly drifted apart as family, work, and other side issues tugged each of us in different directions, and our group of six became a group of 5, then 4, then finally falling apart. A few of us made valiant attempts to restart it occasionally, but sometimes its best not to dust too much dirt off a corpse! The last time we attempted something was about 10 to 15 years ago, and this was a one off session. It was huge amounts of fun, but the same issues persisted around time, and it stayed as a one off session.

Recently though I started watching ‘Critical Role’ which is basically the ultimate D&D group, played by voice actors. Its truly hilarious, and anyone who has roleplayed before will spot the usual jokes, asides, and humour. It left me feeling like I was missing out on something, and I pondered how to correct that.

When I was looking for Board game groups, I used the wonderful ‘Meetup’ app, which pointed me in the direction of a brilliant boardgaming group. I thought I’d try this again for Roleplayers. I found there were several groups in the centre of London, but I didn’t really want to have to travel that far, and found one based in North London. I signed up, and last night I grabbed my favorite dice (didn’t want to take the whole bag, don’t want to look like a loon!) and drove to Highgate to meet up in a pub.

D&D is now on its 5th edition, so the rules have changed somewhat, but the rules are now a LOT simpler, even a muppet like me can pick it up fast. I had a whale of a time, my dice rolled really well for the night, and Spug rides again. Now I have all sorts of plans whizzing round in my head, and I kinda need them to stop, before I fall into that deep well of “Buying all the Stuff”
